Rodman averaged only 7.3 points per game. This has to be by far the lowest for anyone in the NBA Hall of Fame. He ranks near the top for career rebounds per game, however. About two-thirds of Rodman's rebounds were on defense which translates to significantly fewer second chances for opposing teams. Apparently for teaming up with Jordan, this enabled Jordan to have more chances and at a higher percent than Rodman, especially for three-pointers, yet what I find amazing is that Rodman's two-point percentage is quite high and higher than for Jordan on a career basis yet still lower while on the Bulls. In fact, Rodman's two-point percentage is at the level of Lebron James. Jordan's attempts at three pointers was on par for the day but nothing like how it's being done today. Jordan started off as a superstar dunker and was doing hardly any three-pointers but upped this aspect late in his career and coinciding with years with Rodman. Perhaps in focusing on rebounding so much, Rodman's shooting ability waned. A high percentage in scoring does not imply something outstanding if doing it relatively few times and perhaps more or less when most assured like in lay-ups, but is something that should not be overlooked entirely. Now, with Jordan in many of his 2-pointers, besides the obvious dunking, was superb fade-aways that no doubt was not something Rodman could do and of course these type of shots couldn't have as high of a percentage made as lay-ups. Though the focus here is on Rodman, not Jordan, I believe some remarks should be made to put in perspective Rodman's high two-point percentage.
Possibly in Rodman getting only 7 rebounds per game and scoring 14 points per game would be the critical inversion that would have been just as effective realizing Jordan and Pippen were also on the team. And so it cannot be stated that the Bulls in winning their second set of NBA finals required Rodman since had a player having such an inversion was in his place might produce the same results, but while that was not the case, Rodman's contribution was certainly sufficient.
Now, in comparing the Chicago Bulls team of winning their first set of three NBA finals, they had Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and Horace Grant as their big scorers. For the second set and the time Rodman was on the team, it was Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and Toni Kukoc as the big scorers. Although there is much more involved, one quick take-away from this is the Bulls could have sacrificed a little on the number of high scorers with the immense number of rebounds Rodman was supplying.
Rodman's 1991-1992 season I'd say was his very best. Most ever total rebounds of his career and with high percentages in both two and three pointers. Though his three point attempts were low, they were not insignificant at the time, and having a percentage that was not slacking at all, posting a respectable 0.317. Rodman showed at times he's capable of doing more than rebounding, but the rebounding aspect made him a stand-out.
